Kong has a number of well maintained
hiking trails - most within a 30-60 minute bus ride from the city.
On Hong Kong Island one of the best hikes is along Dragon's Back in the Shek O Country Park, down to Big Wave Bay and Shek O. More challenging hiking routes are on Lantau Island and the New Territories. The photograph right was taken of Lantau Peak on Lantau Island. The Country and Marine Parks Authority has informative web pages on country parks and recommended hiking trails in Hong Kong. |

Shek O
Hap Mun Bay
Cheung Sha - on South side of Lantau Island. Water quality is good and the beach is well maintained and regularly cleaned.
Facilities: Changing rooms, showers. There is a popular beach-front restaurant at Lower Cheung Sha beach.
To get to Cheung Sha: take the ferry from central pier to Mui Wo ($25 and 45 mins), then any bus going to Tong Fuk, Tai O or Ngong Ping. Get off one stop after Lower Cheung Sha village ($7.70 and 15 mins - you will pass the YMCA and then the Police Headquarters on the right of the bus. Get off at the next stop.)
An alternative route: MTR to Tung Chung, then catch the Mui Wo Pier bus over the hill and get off at Lower Cheung Sha village. (When you see the Fire & Ambulance Station on the left hand side of the road, get off at the next stop.)Hap Mun Bay - This is one of the best beaches within easy access around the Sai Kung area. It's a short junk ride away from the Sai Kung waterfront - has clean water, white sand, and pontoons moored 50m off the shore.
Facilities: There are only basic facilities at the beach so you should take your own drink and food. Toilets, changing rooms and showers are provided.
To get there: take a bus to Sai Kung, then negotiate a junk ride with the ladies selling tickets on the waterfront (they will find you.) It's typically around HK$30 return each. Make sure you agree on and understand the pick-up time. Last boat usually leave around 6pm.The South Island beaches on the south side of Hong Kong Island - convenient to get to, but often crowded. It's best to check the paper first for water quality. South Bay Beach, Middle Bay beach close to Repulse Bay are the best. Shek O is a good beach and facilities, but the water quality is often only fair or poor.
