If you get one guidebook to Hawaii Island, then get this one. Two years of local research and the extra effort over the other guidebooks shows. The material is well organized and comprehensive. It is particularly good for hiking and adventure information. Their maps show just the right level of detail including the very useful mile markers.

You can buy from the usual on-line booksellers. The same publishers also have guidebooks covering the other Hawaii islands.

The Rough Guide to Hawaii

One book covers all the Hawaii islands – so it’s good if you will be visiting several islands. I found it difficult to find the right section/page and spent a lot of time thumbing through for information.  Hiking information is minimal. One advantage over the “Ultimate Guidebook” is the locator maps for their recommended hotels and restaurants.

The Lonely Planet to Hawaii

I did not purchase this guidebook. No doubt it’s the usual authority on accommodation and eating.
