Travel suggestions for ReykjavíkHow long? - you can see the main sights in a full day. If you want to try Reykjavík nightlife you should stay Friday or Saturday night. Several tourists I met in Iceland had spent 2-3 days in Reykjavík and then regretted not having more time to see the rest of the country. So I recommend staying one day at the start, then if you run out of things to see and do in Iceland you can spend more time in Reykjavík at the end of your stay. Accommodation - I stayed in the Litli ljóti Andarunginn (ugly
duckling) guesthouse. It's right in the city center, close to most of the
tourist sights and the town hall airport bus stop, and a 5 minute drive from
the long distance bus station. If you stay there on a Friday or Saturday
night you will need earplugs because of the street party going on all night;
the rest of the week is no problem. I liked the owners - helpful but not
fussy. You have to pay in cash (no credit cards); there is an ATM a block
away. Food - there are plenty of eating places in central Reykjavík. I liked "Uncle Tom's Cabin" - a basement cafe on Laugavegur; a good place for coffee or lunch. Transport - a car would be a nuisance and you can see alot around the city center. There is a good bus service and the drivers were very helpful. One driver even got out of the bus and pointed out the direction at my stop. It's a flat fee ride. Be warned that the bus numbering and routing has completely changed from the present Lonely Planet 2004 guide. Places you might want to go by bus:
