Travel suggestions for ThingvellirHow long? - it will take at least a full day to visit the big three sites. Food - I liked the soup at the visitor center cafe at Gullfoss. Things to do - At Thingvellir, as well as the historic sights, there is horse-back riding and easy hiking through the rift zone to an abandoned farm site at Skógarkot. There are several trails radiating out from the farm. The Sandhólastigur trail between the camping ground and Skógarkot was a nice walking trail; walking back along Skógarkotsvegur the horse tracks leave a bigger path. The visitor's center provides maps and advice. At Gullfoss you might want to put on water-proof gear before approaching the falls. |
